Ginger-festival
According to genetic scientists, redheads are dying out and will be extinct in about a hundred years, National Geographic reports. The reason for this is the increasing globalization; nowadays people move, meet and produce babies over borders much more than just fifty years ago which leads to the mixing of genes. All dark genes are dominant, and the ginger population has always been small: less than 2% of the world population. The density of gingers is greatest in Scotland, where about 40% are carriers of the red gene, and 13% carries it visibly. The gene is a long ago mutation from the north of Europe and apparently, according to National Geographic, the positive part of being a redhead is the effect of the body being able to take up Vitamin D more efficiently. Although there negative side: the risk for skin-cancer increases along with the sensitivity for heat and coldness.
Some guys who refuse to believe in this science backed-up theory are the organizers of the festival ‘Roodharigendag’ (or ‘the Redhead Day’ in English) that takes place in Breda, Holland, where this year in early September, when the festival celebrated its fifth year, 3000 redheads came together. He reason for this is to strengthen the self esteem among gingers, since a certain type of racism and discrimination against redheads is more common than people think.
At IHGR I estimated the density of gingers to be somewhat 0,02% of the students. The future doesn’t look bright for us, but is 100 years really enough for nature to exterminate all gingers?

That there is racism and discrimination against redheads I find absolutely ridiculous. Then of course, all sorts of racism and discrimination is ridiculous. But I didn’t even know what prejudice there is against redheads before i searched for it on the internet!! “Beastly sexual desire and moral degeneration”? (OK now the beastly sexual desire thing doesn’t actually sound like nonsense – don’t ask) But maybe I’m just helping to strengthen the reason for why you wrote that “a certain type of racism and discrimination against redheads IS MORE COMMON THAN PEOPLE THINK”. Maybe I’ve just not paid attention.
During the Middle Ages red hair and green eyes were a sign you were a witch, a werewolf or a vampire, and today there are lots of fancy words for discrimination for redheads such as “gingerphobia” and “gingerism”, and less fancy ones such as “carrot tops” and “carrot heads”. There are alot of nasty stories too of redheads being murdered just from the fact that they were gingers. But still. White people get disciminitated too, black people, asian people – we’re all being discriminated.
Being best friends with a ginger I can conclude, from my experiences, that the most attention given to gingers cause they’re gingers are given by the gingers themselves. Before I met my ginger friend I’d never given gingers a special thought, and I still don’t that often. But my ginger friends definitely talks about it more than anyone else. Maybe that’s how the gingers cope with it? Some sort of pre-self-defense mechanism thing. Not needed on me though, cause I couldn’t care less. Now that I think of it I do it too; I diss myself for being a white chick tryin’ to be gangsta (I’m not actually TRYING, but sometimes it seems like it and then it’s funny). But no one else has commented on the fact I’m just white trash (except from my cracker friend who find those moments just as funny as I do) so maybe I’m putting up an unnecessary self defensive mechanism thing too. So, look up – we’re all under the same sky!

What’s meant by discrimination of gingers is nothing that I have experienced myself too much, but it’s the kind of thing that, if said to for example a black person, would be seen as racism, but you as a ginger are supposed to simply swallow. Commenting a brunette or a blonde’s hair would be kind of irrlevant since it’s not an effective way of making a person feel bad for him/herself when everybody else has it. That’s why it’s very simple to do it with a redhead: often it’s only one person in a class. Though I get what you mean.

I love gingers, I have alot of ginger friend so I don’t get how people can have anything against them. I believe that gingers should be classified as “Endangered”. Because if they were, maybe they would produce babies together! I mean, when animals are almost extinct they are classified as endangered, why not human races too?

I know what you mean, but I don’t think we should treat redheads like animals and let them produce more because they’re “rare”. I actually don’t think you should force animals to make babies either. But to be honest I don’t think that they will be totally extinct, I mean, let’s say 200 years from now, if both parents carry the gene, allthough chances are low, the kid could be a red head!

I agree with Sarah. We should not treat redheads like animals. They have the same value as everyone else, just a different hair color.

I find this article very interessting. I knew that there are only 2% redheads in the world and i have heard the ” funny ” redhead jokes going around school and on the internet ,but i had no idea that the redheads are dying out. And i definatly did not know that they will be gone in about 100 years.
Allthough as i have read on the internet back in the days being a redhead was not a good sign. Being a redhead meant that you were either born with a diesese or a witch etc. Obviously the respect for redheads has decreased and it is no longer weird, instead some people find this hair colour very beutiful. But i really hope that the discrimination against redheads stop because theres nothing really to do if you are a redhead execpt colour your hair!.

I wonder why they make it such a big deal.. I mean, does it really matter what colour your hair is? Who cares? I never think of gingers as something rare, it’s just a haircolour, so whatever. I guess it depends on where you live too. If a blond girl moves to a country where everyone else is dark, of course she will stand out, and I guess it’s the same thing with gingers. But in Sweden it shoulden’t really be a big deal, since people here in Sweden have all sorts of hair colours. Butt still, interesting subject..

I laughed while reading this article. It was a very amusing text, and I think it gets even more interesting when you’ve read and studied genetics in your biology classes, as I did in ninth grade.
Of course it is sad that a hair color is about to vanish, but I don’t think you can prevent it either. Everyone has the right to love and make babies with whoever they want to.
Will it end up with everybody looking the same? With brown hair and brown eyes, as these features are dominant? And most of all, does it matter? Because it’s actually who you are and not what you look like that actually means something.

I think it would be very sad if redheads were to become extinct since it’s great to have differences between people and not having everyone looking more or less the same. But as said before I also think it’s impossible to prevent. Let’s just hope that the genes live on and that we will still have people with red hair a long way into the future!

Racism, any kind, is bad and mostly based on prejudices. But in this case I find it very hard to believe that anyone would actually dislike someone for being ginger. Besides, blonds all over the world are being accused of being stupid everyday! While gingers only have to deal with having no souls. As a pretty clever blond myself, I think I’ve already proved my point. Being judged by your hair color is very common. I’m sure I do it everyday, judge people by their appearance. Probably without even thinking about it. I am also being judged, some people even assume that all blonds just dyed their hair to look good. So with that they are stupid and vain! But no. Some of us are just lucky. Facts aside, racism is wrong and even though prejudices are so common, you should always think twice before judging people by their appearance, hair color, clothes or iPod cases. Also, being a ginger comes with so much pressure. You have to abstain from wearing pink. Since this will obviously look terrible with your hair color. You have to act like south park is right, that you may not step into the sun, otherwise you will get skin cancer and die.

I hear people around me all the time say bad things about redheads. I don´t understand what is so funny about it? I don´t either see why they are so different? Just because they have red hair? It´s the same as if someone would be dirty blonde. People are people. There is no room for critisizing each other and just acting ridiculous.
I agree with Magdalena, I am also a ´smart blonde´so to say. People have that view about blondes all over the world. Some just makes jokes and try to be funny, but I also think that some believe it.
I also agree with what she said about the predjudice and the racism. It is all around us, everyday. And i think that people need to start acting more real and just face it that there are different people with different apperances.

Why should we discriminate people on what haircolour they have. We are all human in our own way. They have the same value as is. Theres no they there is a we.

Being a normal bloke who happens to have a full head of ginger hair, I can safely say i love who I am and am very comfotabl with it. I think its only as a juvenile that being different could be a problem. I am a confident guy but as a child I was very quiet as I was teased and bullied because I was different to the rest of the kids. Its true to say everyone will have some kind of teasing when they were a kid, some more than others.. you will either suffer from it or come out stronger in the long run. Bullying and teasing whatever form it takes is a massive problem. Kids can be the cruellist people at times without the maturity to understand the consequences of their actions.
